Island Introduction & Journey to Isla del Sol

Isla del Sol: Birthplace of the Sun God

According to Incan lore, Isla del Sol is where the Sun God was born. I found this fascinating, a powerful myth adding another layer to the island's already stunning beauty. The sheer history embedded in the very stones felt palpable, a connection to a rich and ancient past.

It's easy to imagine the Incas, their lives intertwined with the sun's rhythms, worshipping here. The breathtaking views across Lake Titicaca only amplified that sense of awe and reverence. I spent a good while just sitting and absorbing it all, letting the stories whisper on the wind.

Navigating the Journey to Isla del Sol

Getting to Isla del Sol wasn't a simple hop, skip, and a jump. First, a bus ride to Copacabana. Then, the unexpected – a boat across a section of the lake before even reaching Copacabana! I hadn't realized that part, which added a layer of adventure to the day. Buying tickets was easy enough, thankfully, just two Bolivianos per person.

The boat ride itself was... well, let's just say my stomach wasn't thrilled. I wasn’t usually prone to seasickness, but feeling under the weather already made me a little more sensitive to the rocking. I opted for the relative calm of the downstairs seats, foregoing the gorgeous views from the upper deck. Reaching the other side, however, was only the beginning.

Copacabana bustled with activity – day-trippers heading to Isla del Sol were everywhere. We, however, had other plans; we were staying on the island itself. After grabbing boat tickets, we embarked on our second aquatic adventure. Finally, the island's shores emerged, and the first things I noticed were the donkeys! Apparently, they are the main mode of transport—charming, but I quickly discovered we’d be doing most of our own hauling.

Choosing between the north and south sides of the island involved a quick deliberation. We opted for the south, known for its hotels and restaurants. That decision turned out to be lucky – we scored a free room upgrade! Our original booking had a shared bathroom, but the staff, sensing my less-than-stellar health and predicting the nighttime chill, generously gave us a private one. It was a small detail that made a world of difference.

Island Accommodation and Initial Explorations

Hotel Check-in and Room Overview

Checking into our hotel was surprisingly smooth. The initial booking was for a room with a shared bathroom, a perfectly acceptable arrangement. But then, a stroke of luck! The hotel staff, noticing my less-than-robust state, upgraded us to a room with a private bathroom. This small act of kindness was incredibly appreciated, especially considering the chilly evening air.

Our room itself was charming, if a little unexpected. Three beds! We were only two, but hey, extra space never hurts. What truly impressed me, however, was the view. From our window, the panorama of Lake Titicaca was breathtaking; a perfect reward after the bumpy boat ride and the slightly unsettling feeling of altitude sickness.

Town Visit and Hiking Preparations

The Challenging Ascent to the Island Town

After lunch, fueled by the stunning lake views, we decided to tackle the climb to the island's town. It looked deceptively short from our vantage point; a charming cluster of buildings clinging to the hillside. The reality, however, was a different story.

The ascent was steeper than it appeared, the altitude making each step a little more challenging. I was still feeling a bit under the weather, and honestly, my stomach cramps made the climb rather unpleasant. The views were breathtaking, though – a constant reminder of the island's raw beauty.

Halfway up, I had to admit defeat. The combination of altitude, lingering queasiness, and the strenuous climb proved too much. We decided to postpone our visit until the next day, saving our energy for the longer hikes planned for our island exploration. Wisdom, I thought, sometimes comes in the form of knowing when to rest.

The Epic Hike Across Isla del Sol

Conquering the Trails of Isla del Sol

The climb to the island's town looked deceptively easy from our hotel. A charming cluster of buildings clinging to the hillside, it appeared. But the reality was a different story. Much steeper than expected, the altitude made each step a struggle. My lingering queasiness from the boat ride didn’t help; stomach cramps turned the ascent into a rather unpleasant experience.

Despite the physical challenges, the views were breathtaking—a constant reminder of the island's raw beauty. But halfway up, I had to admit defeat. The altitude, lingering nausea, and strenuous climb proved too much. We wisely decided to postpone our visit to the town, saving our energy for the longer hikes planned for the next day. Sometimes, the best adventure is knowing when to rest.

The following day, we embarked on a more ambitious trek, aiming to cross the entire island. The trail was far more challenging than anticipated, with some sections requiring careful navigation and a healthy dose of determination. We got a bit lost at one point, but the stunning scenery and the company of a friendly dog kept our spirits high. Reaching the northern part of the island, we eventually decided to turn around, the full hike another time.
