Arrival in Oaxaca and First Impressions
Arrival in Oaxaca City
After five months of backpacking through Latin America, Mexico was our final destination! We were incredibly excited to spend a month exploring this vibrant country, starting in Oaxaca City. I'd heard so much about its rich history and colorful culture – and I wasn't disappointed. The energy was palpable from the moment we stepped off the bus.
Oaxaca City immediately charmed us with its colonial architecture. Buildings painted in bright, cheerful hues lined the streets, a stark but welcome contrast to the sometimes-gritty reality of other Latin American cities we'd visited. The air buzzed with a lively mix of Spanish and indigenous languages, and the aroma of unfamiliar spices hung heavy and inviting in the air. We were instantly captivated.
Our first priority? Breakfast, of course! We found a local spot serving *tlayudas*, which are basically giant crispy tortillas piled high with your choice of toppings. I opted for guacamole and cheese – a simple but delicious introduction to Oaxacan cuisine. The taste was fresh, vibrant and utterly satisfying; a perfect start to our Mexican adventure.
