Arrival in San Gil and Initial Explorations
Journey to San Gil: A Long Bus Ride
Our journey to San Gil started innocently enough. The initial bus ride from Bucaramanga was… eventful, to say the least. Let's just say our driver had a rather enthusiastic approach to speed, especially on those winding mountain roads. I spent a good portion of the trip clinging to the toilet door after a rather abrupt, unexpected ejection from the restroom. Let’s just say I acquired a souvenir bruise.
We arrived at the transfer point in Bucaramanga two and a half hours early! Instead of a relaxing half-hour wait, we were stranded at a deserted bus stop at 4:00 AM. The initial plan for a comfortable night's rest went completely out the window. This unexpected detour definitely added a layer of adventure to our trip, though I wouldn't recommend it for the faint of heart.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, we boarded the bus to San Gil. Exhaustion hung heavy in the air, and sleep, elusive as it had been, was my only companion for the remainder of the journey. The subsequent arrival in San Gil and check-in at the hostel was greeted with a surprisingly detailed briefing on all the local activities, from rafting and canyoning to paragliding and exploring natural pools. Clearly, boredom wasn't going to be an issue.
Hostel Stay and Relaxation
After the chaotic journey, our hostel in San Gil offered a welcome respite. Exhaustion clung to us like a second skin. The hostel itself was perfectly adequate; nothing fancy, but clean and comfortable enough for a good night’s sleep. After a quick check-in, we received a thorough rundown of local activities. Rafting, canyoning, paragliding – the options seemed endless. Boredom, it seemed, was not in the cards.
Our initial plan for a celebratory dinner was quickly scrapped. Complete exhaustion took over. Instead, we opted for a simple breakfast at the hostel itself – waffles, eggs, and a much-needed dose of caffeine. It was the perfect low-key start to our San Gil adventure. We spent the rest of the day recovering. A dip in the hostel pool did wonders. The refreshing water washed away the lingering stress of our journey, and the gentle sun helped to melt away the fatigue. For dinner, we chose the convenience of a shopping mall food court—fried rice and a local apple soda hit the spot.
Finally, a proper night's sleep! I awoke feeling refreshed, the previous day's exhaustion a distant memory. The adrenaline of the unplanned adventure was fading, replaced by anticipation of the days ahead. San Gil was ready to be explored.
