The Affordable Transatlantic Adventure Begins
Planning the Return Trip: A Budget-Conscious Approach
Six months in Latin America had flown by, and the time had come to face the reality of our return journey to Europe. My boyfriend and I had a decision to make: fly direct and comfortably, or embrace the adventure (and the savings) of a budget flight.
We opted for the latter, choosing a route that would test our patience. The flight snaked its way from Mexico City to Amsterdam, then onto Stockholm with a lengthy layover, and finally to Helsinki. It involved multiple flights, security checks, and a good deal of waiting. But at €400 per person, including luggage, it was undeniably a steal. Let's just say we were embracing the 'adventure' aspect wholeheartedly!
The long journey involved some unexpected challenges. Airport restaurants were pricey, forcing us to rely on 7-Eleven for sustenance. (Let's just say I've learned to appreciate the quality of 7-Eleven food... not.) The multiple layovers meant navigating different airports at odd hours, but we managed to find pockets of calm, even squeezing in some sleep during our extended wait in Stockholm. The upside? Unexpected chances to people-watch and make observations on international airport culture.
Despite the hurdles, the budget route brought its own rewards. The longer journey allowed us to savor the sense of completing a significant chapter of our adventure. It forced us to be creative in finding affordable food and rest. And let's be honest, the stories we accumulated on this odyssey were priceless. Sometimes, the best travel memories come not from five-star hotels, but from surviving a truly epic, slightly chaotic, and utterly budget-friendly journey.
