Arrival and Initial Exploration

Arrival in Paracas and Unexpected Illness

Our arrival in Paracas was less than idyllic. After weeks of backpacking through South America, I woke up feeling awful. A full-blown flu, complete with fever, hit me out of nowhere. Blame it on the air conditioning in our previous hostel, I suppose. Rule, bless his heart, was incredibly supportive, but it definitely put a damper on our initial explorations.

We spent the first day mostly recovering. A short stroll along the beach was all I could manage; swimming was completely out of the question. Even the delicious ice cream felt like a victory. I felt a bit better the next day, enough to embark on the planned Paracas National Reserve tour, though I still wasn't 100%.

Paracas National Reserve: Beaches and Coastal Wonders

Exploring the Paracas National Reserve

Our tour of the Paracas National Reserve began a little chaotically – a slightly confusing start with some initial hiccups regarding what was included in the tour price. But hey, these things happen, right? We eventually got underway, and our first stop was Playa Roja, or Red Beach. We viewed this stunning beach from a viewpoint first, getting a breathtaking overview of the crimson sands before getting closer. The waves here were seriously intense, however, making swimming strictly forbidden – a wise precaution, I'd say.

Next, we headed to La Mina beach, apparently the most popular swimming spot in Paracas. An hour of sun, sand, and sea followed. The water was surprisingly chilly, but the refreshing dip was exactly what I needed after my earlier illness. It was wonderful simply to relax and soak in the atmosphere, though I did wish we’d had more time there. The whole experience felt a bit rushed, which was the only real downside to an otherwise well-organized trip.

Our final stop was a lunch spot with spectacular views. It was undeniably touristy, but that didn't diminish the surprisingly good food or the stunning panoramic vistas. Honestly, the food was a pleasant surprise – delicious and a perfect ending to a fun-filled day. It’s proof that even at the more touristy locations, some hidden gems exist.

Island Boat Tour and Wildlife Encounters

A Thrilling Boat Tour Adventure

The next day dawned bright and promising, a stark contrast to my previous ill-fated arrival. We were embarking on a boat tour, part of a cleverly priced package deal – 87 soles per person for both the National Reserve tour and this aquatic adventure. Smart move, I thought, especially considering the chaotic port area; I was relieved to be with a tour group and not navigating the bustling crowds on my own.

Boarding the boat was a hilarious experience. As the only English speakers on board, Rule and I were promptly ushered to the front, practically securing prime viewing spots. The tour itself was engaging, though maybe a bit less focused on wildlife viewing than I’d anticipated, owing to the El Niño season. The tour guide, however, was delightful; friendly and engaging, he even gave a quick hello to my YouTube audience.

Despite the El Niño impact, we still saw plenty of sea lions! It was incredible to see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat, frolicking in the waves. The boat tour was, honestly, a highlight of our Paracas trip. It was thrilling, enjoyable, and a great way to experience the beauty of the coastline.
